Halloween :: Bag of Popcorn

This is my favorite idea for this year.  It's super simple and doesn't require massive amounts of face-paint or wigs which means you can wear it to work and still be able to present at a meeting or be a "grown-up."  Nothing is worse than trying to make a serious presentation (or be taken seriously at all) when you are dressed up like a clown.

I did take a picture of me dressed up.  You won't see it.  It was super goofy and since Jeff wasn't around to take the picture it wasn't well lit either.  You get the idea - it's a bag of popcorn.  If you saw the afternoon news on KOMO yesterday, then you saw me with the hat on!

The basic idea is to create a T-shirt that looks like the popcorn bag and then create a hat to make it look like you are "full" of popcorn.  Corny, I know (I've been dying to use that one!)

Popcorn T-shirt

You'll need
1 white t-shirt
Red fabric paint
Freezer paper
Sponge paint brush
Hot iron

Step 1: Wash, dry, and iron the t-shirt
Step 2: Trace the word "popcorn" on the freezer paper.
Step 3: Cut out the negative image of the word "popcorn" to create a stencil out of freezer paper.
Step 4: Iron the freezer paper stencil onto the t-shirt.  Use the hot "cotton" setting and press well.
Step 5: Cut 1 inch strips of freezer paper and iron them in lines one inch apart from each other down from the word popcorn to create stripes.
Step 6: Apply paint to the t-shirt using a sponge brush.
Step 7: Let paint dry and set according to package instructions.

Popcorn hat

You'll need
1 8-inch circle of paper
Stapler
Hot glue + glue gun
3 cups of popcorn
Hole punch
1 yard of ribbon

Step 1: Cut a slit down the circle from one edge to the middle.
Step 2: Overlap the open end of the slit to create a cone shape.  Make it as small or as large as possible.  Staple in place.
Step 3: Punch a hole on either side of the hat and tie ribbon through each hole to create "ties"
Step 4: Glue popcorn to the hat.
