Halloween Candy Solution #1 :: Lemon Head Vodka
I don't know about you, but the term "extra candy" is a lot like the term "extra money." It just can't be done. We never end up with "extra" but we always end up with lots. I have some solutions for using up that "extra" candy in some fun ways.
Lemon Heads are a fabulous way to create quick and dirty Lemon Drop Martinis. Simply dump the candy in vodka and shake. Let sit 24 hours then strain out candy. Shake over ice or serve on ice with soda water. Cheers!
:: Ratio ::
16 mini lemon head candies to one cup of vodka
4 regular sized candies to one cup of vodka

Happy Hour Friday :: Birthday Margaritas
My version of margaritas couldn't be simpler. And I make a whole pitcher, so you can share.
1 cup good tequila
2 cups limeade
1/4 cup triple sec
Pour ingredients into a pitcher. When you're ready to serve, pour four (ish) ounces into a cocktail shaker and shake well over ice. Garnish with a lime.
Happy Birthday to me!

Happy Hour Friday :: From Martha's Rooftop
Last night I had this while standing on the rooftop at Martha Stewart's headquarters. Maybe it was the dazzling view, maybe it was chatting with Kevin Sharkey, maybe it was the friendships I'd already made during the day. Whatever it was - this was delicious. And it's totally something my sister would love too.
From Martha's Rooftop
2 ounces prosecco
1 ounce Aperol
1 ounce club soda
Pour in a champagne glass (preferably) and garnish with an orange slice (preferably blood orange)

Happy Hour Friday :: My kind of Lemonade
It's 95 degrees in Seattle today. For us North-westerners, that's melting weather. I'm going to have a lemonade and cool off! Cheers.

Happy Hour Friday :: Thai one on
I wanted to call this a "Mai Thai" or a "My Thai" but those are already legitimate cocktails - not Friday afternoon in the sun cocktails. This is way simpler than anything else I saw and refreshingly lovely. Enjoy!
My Mai Thai
1 ounce dark rum
2 ounces limeade
1 teaspoon cointreau
1/4 teaspoon finely grated lemongrass (use a micro-planer)
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice mix all ingredients. Shake vigorously. Pour into a glass {even the ice} and enjoy. Garnish with the remaining lemongrass, if you'd like.

Happy Hour Friday :: Fever Tree Delights
Last week the most lovely package arrived in the mail - a box filled with tiny Fever Tree bottles! Mr. Hedin and I set about in the very important job of tasting each one with - and without - alcohol. It was rigorous, but we did it for you.
And here's the verdict... we loved them. But we had preferences, whiskey + ginger ale = awesome. Gin + Mediterranean tonic = awesome. Vodka + Mediterranean tonic = not awesome. Gin + Bitter Lemon = awesome.
Fever Tree comes from Britain and is carefully made to ensure their flavors are not overly sweet (like "regular" tonic) and over powering to the flavor of good spirits. When you're paying as much as we are for your spirits, isn't it nice to add a mixer that you can still taste the flavor of?

Happy Hour Friday :: Singapore Slings
When I was planning a shower for Shirley, I immediately knew I was going to make Singapore Slings. Shirley loves to travel, loves the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong, and was dreaming of a honeymoon somewhere in the Orient.
Singapore Slings are also pink.
Singapore Slings
1 cup gin
1/2 cup cherry liqueur
4 cups pineapple
1/2 cup lime juice
4 tablespoons cointreau
4 tablespoons benedictine
1 tablespoon bitters
3/4 cup grenadine
Mix all together in a pitcher and serve over ice. This makes enough for a crowd - not an individual serving.

Happy Hour Friday :: Fruity Loopy Splash
I had a rough week. Mr. Hedin went fishing all week, the car broke down, and it rained. Overall, not my best performance. But it's Friday, cocktail hour is quickly approaching, and I want something fruity, a little loopy, and deliciously summery.
May I present to you, The Fruity Loopy Splash. It's a little fruity, a little spicy, a little saucy, and fabulously fabulous. Cheers!

Happy Hour Friday :: Root-y Root Beer Floats
When I first discovered Art in the Age's ROOT, I was super excited about the potential of a grown-up Root Beer Floats. I was not wrong. These are perfect for the Fourth of July!
Cheers - have a great weekend.
Root-y Root Beer Floats
2 scoops vanilla ice cream
1 shot ROOT
4-6 ounces really good Root Beer
Scoop the ice cream into a tall glass and pour ROOT and Root Beer over top. Serve with a tall spoon and a straw.

Happy Hour Friday :: Blueberry Blended
I am a little bit obsessed with Oola Vodka right now - it's sipping vodka, which is dangerous. Luckily, I'm not the only one. My friends at Metropolitan Market agreed that it's a super good vodka and the local owners are super adorable. It's a win win.

The Pink Flamingo

2 ounces ginger ale
splash of pomegranate
maraschino cherry

Happy Hour Friday :: B Champagne Cocktail
For our champagne toast for Brittney's birthday, I made a super easy champagne cocktail. It's a delightful way to start dinner.
B Champagne Cocktail
1/2 ounce St. Germain
1/2 ounce Elderberry syrup
Champagne
Pour St. Germain and Elderberry syrup into a champagne glass. Top with champagne. Serve immediately.
Happy B(ooze) Day!
Today is the day that the prohibition era laws in the state of Washington have been repealed. We can now buy hard alcohol in the grocery store.
This is so exciting, not because we can now buy orange juice and vodka in the same location, but because the access to local distilleries and hard to find product is unprecedented. No longer are we subject to purchase only what the state ordered and no longer are we asking questions of an employee who usually doesn't care.
As you might imagine, I stopped by two of my favorite places yesterday to check out what they were doing for Happy B(ooze) Day.
Wine World & Spirits has a ridiculous amount of wine (hence the name) and they have added to that a ridiculous amount of spirits and spirit accouterments. They have more than 2000 separate skus with everything from the usual (Grey Goose Vodka) to the unusual (Douglas Fir Liqueur) to the local (Oola Gin). They have treated spirits the same way they have treated wine :: an emphasis on local - and massive quantity. If you are looking for something new, different, or interesting, they are the place to go. Plus they hired experts in the field - so they have people who really know their stuff.
My home away from home, Metropolitan Market, is also carrying spirits (what grocery store isn't?!?). They are buying liquor much like they buy everything else - mostly local, focused on specialty, and of the best quality. Which means you will be able to buy your favorites at Met Market when you buy your lettuce and salsa.
I am so excited for both of these stores for different yet similar reasons. At Met Market I know I will be able to pick up a good local gin on a regular basis because that's where I get my groceries. Wine World is going to have such a huge selection and knowledgeable people that I know I can find kooky stuff there - and learn a little about it before I spend a ton on money... which leads us to...
...pricing, we aren't California yet. The price is increasing by leaps and bounds. The shelf price will look the same and feel regular. It's at the register that the shock will come in. There is a new 20.5% tax on liquor. Add that to the $40 bottle of gin you were holding and you may just pass out from shock alone.
It makes Happy Hour just a little more special...
and if you're paying out the nose for your booze, why not support the locals?

Happy Hour Friday :: B Day Punch
For Brittney's birthday party I filled a punch bowl with a light, refreshing punch - a recipe we learned at our bartending class (I just assigned actual quantities...)
B Day Punch
1 recipe oleo sacchurum
2 cups sparkling water
3 cups bianco vermouth
4 cups earl grey tea
Oleo Sacchurum = Translates to "Sugared Oil" but it's an old 19th century punch ingredient. It should be making a comeback any day now. Here's how to make it :: The rind of 4 lemons (peel it with a vegetable peeler) + 1/4 cup sugar. Mix and let sit at least one hour.

Happy Hour Friday :: The Masin
1 ounce vodka
2 ounces pineapple juice
1 dash grenadine
Maraschino cherry
Sprig of mint
Pour vodka, juice, and grenadine into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake. Pour - with ice – into a highball glass and garnish with a cherry and a sprig of mint.
