November Knit :: Knit Pumpkin

I like having pumpkins around this time of year.  But orange pumpkins are so "halloween" that I can't handle them after October.  In honor of the month of November Knit I crafted a few pumpkins out of old sweater sleeves and twigs.  This could not be easier.

You'll need
1 old sweater (with sleeves)
Batting
Needle + thread
Hot glue + hot glue gun
a twig

Instructions
Step 1 :: Cut off part of the sleeve of the sweater.  A traditional mens large sweater is about a 5 inch width sleeve.  You'll need eight inches in length.  (the ratio is 8 inch length :: 5 inch width and it works scaled down 7 inch length :: 4 inch width, etc.)
Step 2 :: Using the needle and thread, stitch loosely across one end of the sleeve length (a basting stitch).  Pull the threads at the end gently to close the hole.  Tie off the ends and knot them.
Step 3 :: Repeat the basting stitch on the other end but do not close the hole.  When the stitch is done, fill the sleeve with batting until it's loosely packed.
Step 4 :: Pull the threads on the open end to close and knot them.
Step 5 :: Tuck in the loose "frilly" top on each end.
Step 6 :: Cut a length of a one inch twig to look cute on the pumpkin.  Using hot glue, place the twig in the center of the button and push hard down to catch the bottom 'button' in the glue.  Hold briefly until the glue dries.

Color of the Month :: November Knit

I realize "knit" is not exactly a color - but I couldn't think of anything more perfect that "knit" to capture the coziness of fall.  Knit has inspired a rash of crafts and recipes that I'm excited to share with you this month.  Stay tuned for more and follow along on Pinterest for all of my inspiration!

Color of the Month :: October Grey

Nothing is more evocative of the fall than grey.  Grey skies, grey mornings, grey fog, grey sweaters :: grey is everywhere this time of year.  When done right, grey is amazing.

Color of the Month :: September Green

September is the best month - mostly because it's my birthday month - so it was the perfect month to choose green.  Green is a perfect neutral.  It goes with everything and creates a vibrant backdrop for other colors and neutrals.  I adore green.

I'll be doing so much with green this month - I hope you'll follow along.

Color of the Month :: Blue Mussels

Over the weekend we ate mussels.  We went out to dinner and ordered mussels - then cooked up a big batch of them the next afternoon.  It's a mild obsession, but when you spend weekends on Penn Cove what else would you eat?

P.S. Pearl loves mussels and I quote "'Em are good."

Me & Mini Me :: Back-to-School in Navy

Can you believe it's that time already??  And if you haven't tried to drop off one child while another has tried to stay asleep then you have never discovered the miracle that is a velour track suit for babies.

Color of the Month :: August Blue

I am really into Navy Blue right now. I desperately wanted navy walls in my bedroom - but after trying colors past all that was reasonable, I've settled for the final coat of semi-blue-almost-purple.   But I still really want blue.  It will probably end up in my closet instead - as in some sparkly new shoes.

Are you digging navy right now?  How would you use it?  In the house?  In your closet?  Did I mention my car is navy blue?

As always, you can follow along on Pinterest as I uncover my new favorite things for this month and get a sneak peek at what's in store for September!

Me + Mini Me :: July Stripe Edition

This month I am gaga for red and white stripes.  The big thick stripes are iconic of summer and everything that goes along with it.  I'm getting my kids in on the action too.

Color of the Month :: July Red Stripe

Something about July screams stripes - and red awning stripes even more.  Maybe it's the Fourth of July or maybe it's the sudden onset of summer in the Pacific Northwest - what ever the reason, giant red stripes seem perfect for July.

I'm integrating giant red stripes into the outdoor spaces this summer and bringing a little whimsy to an otherwise basic back yard.  Where will you put stripes?

Spoiled rotton

Yesterday I opened the mail and what to my wondering eyes should appear?  But a beautiful blue box and a gift so premier.  An orange leather wallet that feels so deluxe with a place for your phone, your cards and your bucks.  Over the rustling of tissue I could almost hear the sound of sleigh bells and hoof steps - as if Christmas was near.

Color of the Month :: June Pink

We lost power this week and it totally threw me off!  Off so much that I almost didn't get this post up.  Yikes!  And miss the sunny summer colors of June.

I've long been accused of loving pink.  I really haven't even been one who loved pink but it seems to pop up a lot recently.  Pink is such a fun color - it's friendly and flirty and (when used correctly) is not syrupy sweet.  A little pink makes everything better.

In my year of fabulous colors I'm bring pink in via the master bedroom (don't tell Mr. Hedin).  Rather than a super girly pink bedroom I'm pairing pink with red.  Gasp!  I know, pink and red aren't supposed to go together, but they really do.  They look lovely together when done correctly.

This flamingo print is going to be the centerpiece of the room - paired with a vintage red rug, a pink fabric headboard, a pink covered chair, and white everything else.  I am really excited to get this room going because it's a super dreary green right now and it just makes everything else feel dreary too.

At the end of the year, I'm going to be posting the entire year of color with every project each month inspired.  I hope you have been inspired too - if so, send me a photo and we'll revel in the colors together!

Color of the Month :: May Brass

domino magazine

I am super crazy into brass right now.  The funny thing about being into something like this is that it's still considered "old lady" by the vast majority of people, but a select handful (I call them the cool kids) are starting to use shiny brass.

It's totally making a comeback.  You can quote me.

While I wait for the rest of the world to catch up to me, I am struggling with finding fixtures and finishes for the basement that are shiny brass.  I found pulls for the cabinets at a salvage, the door hinges were easy because brass is a stock choice, the knobs were available but the hardware shop had a hard time finding them because no one had ever ordered brass before, and the problem has come down to faucets.

my board for the basement

The bathroom has chrome finishes because it was easiest (and brass actually makes Mr. Hedin roll his eyes).  But the other spaces will have brass.  It's just going to be a trick finding brass faucets that don't look like your grandma just moved out.  Or that it's left over from 1986.

If anyone has suggestions for faucets that are modern and brass, please let me know!  Otherwise, you can follow me on Pinterest for all of my brass finds and loves.  I LOVE BRASS!

Color of the Month :: April Purple

Do you love purple?  I love purple.  I've learned it's a very polarizing color.  You either love it or you don't.  I grew up in a purple bedroom.  For the 'elementary years' anyway.  I painted my room often and changed the 'color scheme' regularly.  But for a good part of my younger years my bedroom was purple and red.

I've always had a soft spot for the color.  Mostly because it looks good on me.  If you also have olive-ish skin and dark hair, consider purple your new best friend.  That's where I'm bringing in purple this month.  I love it around the house, but I love it better on me.

Maybe because of the polarizing nature of purple, or maybe just because it's often considered a color for 'little girls', purple clothes are not super easy to find as a grown up.  I've rounded up (and ordered) my favorites.

Where will you bring in color this month?

As always, follow me on Pinterest to see my color of the month (and months past) and all of the fabulous things I find all month.  I even have a purple cocktail planned for this Friday!  Hooray!

Color of the Month :: Turquoise

I think turquoise is one of the best colors.  Not especially the stone - it has such distinct "southwestern" connotations.  But the bright shade, reminiscent of sparkling beaches and crashing waves.  Turquoise is a very soothing color.  In this month drenched with kelly green and shamrocks, why not buck tradition (we're bucking Pantone, after all) and give turquoise a whirl?

One of the things I love about this color is that you can use it practically anywhere.  It could be hand towels, mixing bowls, a picture - or you could go all out and tile the whole bathroom in it.  I don't recommend it because we'll have another color next month and I don't want you to go re-tile in just a few weeks.

I have a small-ish project planned in the realm of turquoise that is really exciting.  Mostly exciting because I've been meaning to do it for TWO YEARS!  Eek.  Turquoise is finally the color that inspired change - that inspired I finish this darn project already.

Don't forget to follow me on Pinterest so you don't miss any of the inspiring photos I discover this month!  See you back here next week for a fun - and turquoise - project.

Inspiration :: Funfetti Brights

This month's color of the month came from my love of color.  I love color but, historically, I have shied away from it in favor of 'safer' neutrals.  I think maybe we all do it.  Almost everyone I know has a Pintrest board full of inspiring bright colors but their homes are full of muted versions of the same tones.

Why, I ask?

Color makes us happy.  In this month of dreary skies and colorless gardens, let's pop up the color in everything else we do!

It's not hard to add a little color.  All of our favorite brands are featuring brights in everything from accessories to jeans to shoes.  If you've been safely buying neutrals for years then you have the perfect base to add a pop of something fun.

It's actually really easy to bring color inside the house too.  Later this month I'll have some 'bright interiors' ideas to inspire you to bring a little of the Funfetti spirit to heart!  How will you bring color in this month?  Find something that makes you smile and put it where everyone can see it.

Why is it important?  Because you must be yourself - and you are fun.
