Thoughtful Monday

I had a great weekend.  I got to sign books at Metropolitan Market and meet so many of you - it's probably the best part of my job.  And I spent a lot of time with family - another bonus for working "for myself."

I also had a really thoughtful weekend.  This time of year we are bombarded with everyones 'deep thoughts' as commencement addresses are read and re-read.  And because so many celebrities are giving the address, they are repeated on every radio station and news channel - at least the really good ones are (and a few of the really bad ones).  On my way to one book signing this weekend the radio station was playing a little 'best of' featuring recent addresses as well as one from Steve Jobs in 2005.

I found it especially poignant.  Everyday I see people; cookbook authors, bloggers, TV hosts, friends;  doing things I would love to be doing.  And then I heard this:

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Such good reassurance that if you are following your own path, it's the right path.  I have some great partnerships, great projects on the horizon, and a great family.  Comparing myself, or trying to be something I'm not, will just sabotage everything else.

My charge for you this Monday is to be you.  Uniquely you.  Don't let others mold you into someone else.  And my promise to you, is that I will be me - continuing to provide you with ideas, recipes, and crafts for creating a lovely life.  Because here's what I believe.

I believe in heavy cream
I believe in buying only the best
I believe that everything always works out in the end
I believe that creating friendships is more important than partnerships
I believe in spending time with my children while they still like me
I believe that I can always make it myself
I believe that I can do it better than anyone else
I believe that 'perfect' is relative
I believe that life is what you make it - so let's make it lovely.

Have a great Monday.
