I made doughnuts. And they were good.
And this book, Top Pot Hand-Forged Doughnuts, is why. I had no idea how outrageously easy doughnuts are to make. Beyond simple, technically - just time consuming. I made the dough the night before and stuck it in the refrigerator to wait until the morning.
Lars helped me roll it out and cut it because he really wanted to help and 370 degree oil is not ideal for cooking with a three-year old. Once the first batch came out of the hot oil, he didn't want to help anymore because he was busy eating the "hearts." I don't have a doughnut cutter and the smallest cookie cutter I had to make a doughnut hole was a heart - they actually looked really cute. We could say I did it on purpose. I did. It was on purpose. We made doughnut hearts. They were Lars' favorite.
Pearl preferred the large size - not just the heart. She ate three. She discovered she could stand on the edge of the baby chair and reach the plate on the counter. She helped herself. And yes, she stands on everything if she thinks it will help her reach something. Even if it won't. She'll stand on it. She's a daredevil.
Because of the time involved, I'm not making these every morning. But I said that about cinnamon rolls and we've had those twice this week. I am definitely trying the baked version in the back of the book. Seems less messy and easier to do with Lars and Pearl.
Pearl tried to feed one to Judson. We caught her just in time. She's a good share-er.
