House Projects :: Pearl's Room

Pearl didn't actually have a room until we moved into this house.  We had tried to have her and Lars share at the old house and it was entirely unsuccessful.  So she had been sleeping in our room.  Now she has her own space and I really want to make it cute.  But, since these walls are coming out as soon as I can convince Mr. Hedin to remodel the main level, I don't really want to spend a bunch of money on actually fixing it.

In the interim I have made it as cute as I can with things that can move into her next room.

Pearl still sleeps in her crib, but will eventually move into the brass bed that is a Hedin family heirloom. All of the wicker was in my room growing up.  I don't like toys in a bedroom, instead she has books and her stuffed animals.  The books are on picture rails from Ikea so she can easily reach them.

The dresser kept looking weird until I added the tray.  It's an old cookie sheet with a piece of fabric spray glued onto it.  Thanks Martha.

The curtains are a necessity.  Her room is really quite bright so I needed to create something with "black out" capability.  These are two layers of fabric with black-out cloth sandwiched between.  They have grommets on all four corners and in the middle.  The top hangs on cup hooks.  The curtains can be pulled up a number of ways by choosing different grommets.  I think I'm making these for the master bed room too because we are in dire straits for curtains.

UPDATE
Oh!  I forgot to mention the super cool Pearl sign.  There used to be a restaurant in Coupeville (on Whidbey Island, Washington) named Pearl's.  It closed at some point in the 60's or 70's and a friend of my dad's snagged it for his mother - named Pearl.  She passed a short time ago, before my Pearl was born.  When they found out I had named my baby girl Pearl they passed the sign along to us because, in their words "Pearls should be strung together."  We love the sign.  LOVE.

  1. I love the tray on top of the dresser, what a great way to use an old cookie sheet. I also like (even for older kids) not having toys in the bedroom, but I am not sure where I would put them. As always thanks for the great ideas & tips.
